RECAP: THE BOX THAT ROCKS @ MoCADA

Photos & Text by Leonard Swann

The opening reception for The Box That Rocks on the first Saturday in March at MoCada(Museum of Contemporary Afrrican Diaspora Arts) in Brooklyn could have been a simple tribute to Hip-Hop pioneer and host of "Video Music Box" Ralph McDaniels for his 30 years of service to Hip-Hop, but it was much more than that. The exibition instead turned out to be a virual time capsule of Hip-Hop history itself, while still paying tribute to the enormous contributions of Mr. McDaniels.

"Video Music Box" is the seminal New York Hip-Hop program Hosted by Ralph McDaniels, Known to the New York Hip-Hop Community simply as "The Box" and "Uncle Ralph." The "Video Music Box" theme song 5 minutes of Funk" by Whodini, has become synonymous with Video Music Box, New Yorkers knew that 3:30 was the time to be in front of your television to catch the latest in Hip-Hop.The show which began in 1983 and aired on WNYC-TV Channel 31 in New York, was the first of it's kind with an emphasis on Hip-Hop, at a time when MTV was reluctant to even play established Black artist such as Michael Jackson much less rap music. Ralph McDaniels gave a platform to Hip-Hop at a time when there were very few available, and has become one of it's most important figures. Ralph can be considered the Don Cornelius of Hip-Hop. New York was the epicenter of early Hip-Hop culture and Uncle Ralph was the man who was documenting and broadcasting it all, always with a emphasis on the positive side of the culture. Numerous legendary Hip-Hop acts have made their breakthrough via Uncle Ralph and Video Music Box.

The Opening reception was attended by many figures from the Hip-Hop community who came out to pay tribute and show respect to Ralph McDaniels, Including DJ Bobbito Garcia, Graffiti artist James Top, Fab 5 Freddy and more. This in itself would have been enough for a great evening, but the icing on the cake was the actual display itself. A stunning collection of multimedia installations, that explore the history of Video Music Box. Included were graffiti, photography, video, and interactive displays, a total Hip-Hop experience for all the senses. Some of the participating artist included Fab 5 Freddy, Bobbito Garcia, Jamel Shabazz and others. By paying tribute to Ralph McDaniels, Mocada also pays tribute to Hip-Hop because the two are one in the same. After 30 years The Box is still going strong airing weekly now on WYNE-TV Channel 25.The exibit runs through May 28 at MoCADA with several other related events to follow.

Wall Writers: Graffiti in its Innocence

From director Roger Gastman - a producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop - comes Wall Writers, a documentary on graffiti in its innocence.

Through unprecedented access to TAKI 183, CORNBREAD, and a host of other legendary writers, Wall Writers tells the story of a time when underprivileged city kids refused to keep lurking in the shadows, when the streets were so wild that fame and infamy became indistinct, when art became a democracy and self-promotion became an art.

And the narration is done by John Waters!

BEHIND THE SCENES: SACRED STITCH Featuring MAST

As the crew over at Sacred Stitch Clothing gears up for the launch of their Spring 2012 Collection, they took the opportunity team up with NY graff artist Mast One, of I.M.O.K. and T.G.E crews, to put together some dope visuals for their loyal fans and followers. Mast spent the weekend with the Sacred Stitch Team at one of NYC’s most premier Streetwear and Lifestyle Boutique’s Community 54. He worked two full days to paint the 30ft X 10ft promotional Sacred Stitch burner on the back wall of the Lower East Side boutique, which came out incredible.

This video features Sacred Stitch’s two days with Mast at Community 54, as well as a sneak peak of their soon-to-launch Spring 2012 Collection. Footage edited by Serringe, of Element Tree, behind the scenes pics taken by Fresh Paint NYC and beats provided by the one and only 6th Sense.

New work New series! Installment 1

****WELCOME!!!!****

Hi everyone! I am SO exited to FINALLY share all my newest work! Over the last year I have been more inspired than ever before and working harder than ever before, and I am now very proud to bring you these new pieces. I have more than 40 new works, from HUGE to teenie tiny and many in-between! Since I can’t post them all at once, I will be sharing them in installments; look for sneak peaks here on my blog. To see more of the first release, including more photos of the pieces below, check my website: http://www.caspiana.com/.

Many pieces are for sale, and I have made prints of some of my favorites. If you are interested, check out my ETSY store or drop me an email (sarah@caspiana.com). Most of the pieces I am listing for sale will be in the smaller range; many of the larger ones are on wood and will be expensive to ship. But, if you feel connected to a larger piece, email me and we can figure out the shipping. Many of these paintings need good “forever homes”. :)

These pieces were inspired by an imaginary world; perhaps the world of Caspiana. The elusive inhabitants are seen as through a window or a crack in our reality. The images are childlike and in some cases disturbing. They deal simultaneously with innocence and immortality, and many read as if part of a story. Please let them whisper their stories to you.

Original Ancient Lion piece not for sale, but prints are available upon request.

Prints of this Owl piece and many others are available in my ETSY store. Other prints are available upon request, just ask! :) sarah@caspiana.com

WIN A PRINT OF THIS OWL PAINTING or a mini piece of ORIGINAL ARTWORK from this new series!!! Simply tweet or update your Facebook status with a link to this blog post (http://sarahwhitmire.blogspot.com/2012/03/new-work-new-series-installment-1.html ). Leave a comment on this post letting me know you've done it and you'll be entered to win!!!

Don't forget to check out my other new pieces by going to http://www.caspiana.com/ and clicking on "paintings". Thanks so much for your time and feedback! :)

drawing on the iPad

I've been trying our drawing on a new iPad I got. I searched what program David Hockney uses and found out it's Brushes. I downloaded it since I figure if it's good enough for Hockney it's good enough for me. With my understanding of photoshop, I was able to comprehend the program in about 5 minutes. It's super easy and fun! I've got the tools set up so it's just like drawing in my sketchbook. Here's a couple drawings, Tooks playing at the Hive, and Chelsea Royal playing at a 'League of Nations' party
